By honoring Luis Cuadrado’s work, I decided to post some of my favourite shots from ‘El Espiritu De La Colmena’ (The Spirit of the Beehive) from 1973. One of my personal favourite films of all time and the best Spanish movie ever made!

Luis Cuadrado was born in 1934 in the city of Zamora Toro (Spain). He studied at the Official School of Cinematografía and introduced in Spain the visual style of the French New Wave. He participated as a director of photography and camera operator on numerous Spanish films of the 1960s and 1970s and with conductors such as Carlos Saura (The Hunt, The Garden of Earthly Delights), Victor Erice (The Spirit of the Beehive) and José Luis Borau (Poachers).

A progressive blindness, which became total, deprived of continuing his work and at Cria Cuervos (1976), another favourite movie of mine, he had to be helped by his disciple Teo Escamilla. He died on January 18, 1980, in Madrid.
